"On Tuesday, the last direct freight train left China for Lithuania, no further trips of these trains are planned," Mantas Dubauskas, a representative of Lithuanian Railways, informed.
Edmundas Daukantas, President of the Lithuanian National Association of Freight Forwarders and Logisticians Lineka, says that alternatives are being sought to transport cargo to Lithuania.
"We are looking for alternative solutions to minimize damage to cargo recipients in Lithuania. Also, working with foreign partners, we are looking for alternative ways to transport cargo to customers in Western countries, ”said E. Daukantas to BNS.
Regular freight train journeys from China to Vilnius started in June 2020.
Back in mid-August, Chinese railways informed customers in Lithuania that these trains - part of the so-called "new silk road to Europe" - would be canceled in late August and September due to the tense political situation between the countries.
Lithuanian Transport Attaché to China Ramūnas Rimkus said that such a Chinese decision is probably politically motivated.
Tomas Jankauskas, the head of the Maritime and Railway Transport Division of the logistics company ACE logistics, which transports goods from China, told BNS at the time that such a Chinese decision would cause inconvenience, but would not do much harm. According to him, cargo from China to Lithuania is likely to be transported through Poland again.
The same was said by the representatives of other logistics companies interviewed by VŽ.
Justas Veršnickas, head of Delamode Baltics, a company run by British logistics group Xpediator PLC, said there were at least two Chinese freight routes without a train to Vilnius: one - and now a widely used route through Poland, the other - through Moscow."
