The last Lithuanian diplomat, President Antanas Smetona,
while fleeing Lithuania, rolled up his pants and waded across the stream. We
are clever fools. We will swim with the broken washing shields.
""One of the evacuation routes could be the Neris,
if we had a blockade of the ground transport infrastructure and some other
sabotage elements, then you can neither blow up nor block the river," -
said V. Benkunskas.
"We are very seriously considering that this could be
one of our evacuation routes," - he said.
According to the mayor of the capital, he consulted with the
military and "specialists in this issue" regarding the adaptation of
the river for evacuation.
"Such a possibility really exists, but we now have a
problem that when sailing down the river towards Kaunas, towards Jonava, it is
difficult to navigate due to its six winding reefs, which are carried away by
the current and with a deeper draft, a ship simply would not be able to pass
through," - said V. Benkunskas. (Here go the shields).
According to him, the Inland Waterways Directorate should
assess what should be done to make the Neris navigable for "more serious
ships."
"Those studies, as I understand it, are done, they have
been analyzed, those works have been assigned to the estimate, that money in
the context of the entire defense projects is really small, up to 10 million
euros,” the mayor said.
“Recreation, tourism and all other things are also
important, but the military context, in terms of military mobility, we have a
completely different light, which is why those works should be done as soon as
possible,” he said.
According to V. Benkunskas, he also spoke with the
leadership of the Ministry of National Defense (MND) of the previous term on
this issue.
“Due to the change of governments, those discussions are
needed again,” said the mayor of the capital. “We have to raise those issues,
the context of the military threat must accelerate that discussion and
decisions must be made.”
Minister of National Defense Dovilė Šakalienė said that she
intends to meet with V. Benkunskas in the near future and discuss
defense-related topics.
"Cooperation between Vilnius City Municipality, the
Ministry of National Defense, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and the
Ministry of Transport and Communications must be more intensive, because we
know what the population concentration is in Vilnius, what the risks and
problems are, and they need to be resolved as soon as possible," said D.
Šakalienė.
She said that she currently does not have enough data to
assess the possibility of adapting the Neris River for military mobility.
"Without data, I will not comment, we will sit down,
talk and then I will say," said the minister."
The minister is stupid like chicken without a head. Talk is the only thing she is able to do.
