“Mr. Swaim rightly points out our culture's growing aversion to work, but misses two of the root causes. First, over the past 60 years, corporations have moved away from the paternalistic style of management, where there was two-way loyalty between employers and employees. Second, the income spread between top executives and front-line workers in nearly all industries has ballooned to levels not seen in the U.S. since the 1920s. As a result, the American workforce has become cynical and jaded, with little affinity for their employers. Don't expect change until employers show more loyalty and reduce income disparities between executives and the rank and file.
