"In Canvas mode for ChatGPT, users will be able to generate individual sections and edit them with shortcuts. It is the "first major update" of the interface since the launch of ChatGPT.
In the midst of a major corporate upheaval, Open AI presented "Canvas" on Thursday, a new user interface for ChatGPT. Its functions are intended to support working with texts and programming in particular. In the results of ChatGPT, users will be able to mark sections in the future and give the AI instructions. Canvas will thus become a kind of copilot with which users can work together on projects.
Access to the beta version is initially limited. Paying Plus and Team customers can already test the function. In the coming days, users with an Enterprise or Education license will also be able to join. In the long term, the tool, which is based on the GPT-4o model, will also be available in the free version of ChatGPT. Open AI describes the function as the "first major update" to the user interface since the launch of ChatGPT.
Canvas becomes the ChatGPT editor
The original ChatGPT chatbot interface did not allow individual sections of the result to be revised. Instead, adjustment was only possible by means of a precise description via a new prompt, or the user had to copy and paste the relevant section. The new function can provide direct feedback "like an editor or a code checker", writes Open AI.
Canvas should automatically open in a new window when ChatGPT recognizes a scenario in which the application could be helpful. Open AI also wants to add shortcuts that allow users to get suggestions and feedback on individual sentences, change the length of a document, check spelling or adjust the reading level.
These functions are very reminiscent of the DeepL Write tool from the German AI start-up from Cologne.
Canvas appears while Open AI is rebuilding
Open AI is currently in the midst of a transformation. The company recently raised $6.6 billion from investors and is now valued at $157 billion. According to media reports, Open AI has instructed its investors not to support competing start-ups such as US competitors Perplexity, Anthropic or Elon Musk's xAI.
Tim Brooks, head of research at Open AI's AI video generation tool Sora, also announced his departure. He is moving to the Google Deepmind team to work on video generation and world simulators. In a post on X, he thanked Open AI for "two amazing years". After Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati also announced her resignation from Open AI, the company is again facing some personnel changes." [1]
