"President Trump has ordered a pause to intelligence sharing with Ukraine, said Central Intelligence Agency Director John Ratcliffe, a move that deprives Kyiv of a key tool in fighting Russia.
The U.S. suspended weapons shipments to Ukraine this week after a contentious Oval Office meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday unraveled plans to sign a minerals deal as a first step in bringing Ukraine and Russia to peace talks. Ratcliffe, appearing Wednesday on Fox Business, said Trump, after that meeting, also "asked for a pause" of intelligence sharing.
The U.S. has shared intelligence with Kyiv since events in Ukraine started in 2022, allowing Ukrainian forces to target Russian troops more effectively.
A White House official said the U.S. paused military aid to Ukraine until Trump is satisfied that Zelensky is making a good-faith effort to engage in talks to stop the conflict. Ratcliffe indicated that intelligence sharing also could resume.
"On the military front and the intelligence front, the pause that allowed that to happen, I think will go away, and I think we'll work shoulder to shoulder with Ukraine," Ratcliffe said.
On Tuesday, Zelensky posted on X that he would sign the minerals deal, but that apparently hasn't been enough to reverse the decision on halting military assistance.
"My team and I stand ready to work under President Trump's strong leadership to get a peace that lasts," Zelensky wrote on X. "Then we want to move very fast through all next stages and to work with the US to agree a strong final deal."
The effect of suspending intelligence sharing is immediate and is likely pushing Ukraine to negotiations more quickly than the pause in weapons shipments, U.S. officials said. Ukraine has enough weapons to keep fighting for weeks, even if the U.S. stops shipments.
While Ukraine produces and purchases its own drones, which provide battlefield visibility, it depends on U.S. military and signals intelligence, along with other data, to conduct operations.
Some Ukrainian intelligence analysts work alongside American counterparts at a U.S. base in Germany to determine which targets to strike.
Ukraine has come to rely on U.S.-made ATACMS and Himars long-range artillery systems, but without U.S. intelligence shaping targeting, their accuracy is greatly reduced, a U.S. official said.
The suspension of intelligence sharing to Ukraine is a major concession to Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has said that U.S. involvement in weapons targeting has made Washington a virtual combatant of the conflict." [1]
It seems that Ukrainian intelligence analysts who work alongside American counterparts at a U.S. base in Germany are just trained monkeys, pushing the red button every time when they are told to do so. They are needed to give some cover for those who really do the shooting. Zelensky is the king of the monkeys, and he started behaving like one.
The second conclusion from these facts is sad for the European Union: it cannot replace the United States in Ukraine. The European Union simply does not have the technology for this. Therefore, the meeting of European Union leaders discussing Ukraine is just a gathering of defeated monkeys, vainly dreaming of prolonging this conflict and loudly whining.
