Ammunition for the Kremlin

"Merz is no longer an opposition politician who can just throw a fit. Only Putin benefits from the Chancellor's now creating the impression that there is a new German position on arms deliveries to Ukraine."

Indeed, the Chancellor has "described something that has been happening for months," and he has rightly made that clear. The debate about range restrictions imposed on Ukraine by Western arms suppliers was ended, half tacitly, half explicitly, in connection with the fighting around Kharkiv and Kursk last year.

Therefore, one wonders why Merz initially suggested a German change of position on Monday. He is no longer the opposition leader who can just throw a fit. In government, every word has to be weighed, especially when it comes to war and peace.

Lavrov Targets Trump

This is primarily demonstrated by the reaction from Moscow. There, too, it is of course known that Ukraine has been using Western weapons to strike Russia for some time.

But now Lavrov is using the Chancellor's statement to portray the Europeans as the real problem.

This, in turn, is aimed at Trump.

Trump's attempts to settle the war through rapprochement with Russia were a major win for Putin. The fact that the process has stalled is something he now wants to blame on Europe.

Since this is unfortunately not a completely hopeless undertaking with this US President, a German Chancellor should not supply Russia with any more ammunition. The new German government should stick to its policy of no longer publicly discussing details about arms deliveries, including the Taurus.”
