The troops hadn't received notification that any other agency was flying unmanned aerial systems in the area. The service members decided the object could pose a threat.
Unbeknown to them, the drone belonged to Customs and Border Protection.
The military shot it down with a high-energy laser weapon, marking the second time in less than two weeks the technology had been fired on the southern border, again setting off a scramble to deconflict myriad agencies in the area.
The latest incident is likely to intensify scrutiny of communications problems among government agencies responsible for the border.
The White House had notified some lawmakers that the Pentagon used a laser to shoot down a CBP drone, according to a person familiar with the matter. A White House representative didn't respond to a request to comment.” [1]
