“The Seimas decided on Thursday that low-emission zones would be mandatory in cities with more than 80 thousand inhabitants, while they would not be mandatory in smaller cities. The Parliament unanimously – with 94 votes in favor – adopted the following amendments to the Law on Alternative Fuels. They will enter into force on December 15 of this year. At that time, the Government proposed that all municipalities would have the right, but not the obligation, to establish low-emission zones and to provide for the procedure for their use. The amendments also propose that municipal councils could establish fees for the entry of polluting vehicles into these zones, if such a model were chosen. In addition, drivers would face fines for violations, such as ignoring the ban on entering the zone: for the first violation – from 40 to 80 euros, for a repeated violation – from 80 to 200 euros.”
