“Kyiv must prosecute corrupt politicians and business
figures if the country wants to join the European Union, a senior Brussels
official has warned.
European Justice Commissioner Michael McGrath told Politico
that European governments will not support a candidate like Ukraine joining the
bloc if it does not demonstrate that it has an effective system for solving
crimes at the highest levels of society.
While the reform process in Ukraine is a “journey,” McGrath
said he believes Kyiv is making “its best efforts” to fight corruption, adding
that he is in constant contact with authorities on the latest developments.
Deborah Haynes, Sky News’ Security and Defence Editor, said
the search of Yermak’s home was “only a matter of time”. She said the scandal,
which has involved several senior Ukrainian officials and ministers, has rocked
the country in the past two weeks.
“This is a very worrying development, especially for
Volodymyr Zelensky, who must be looking strong at the moment, especially with
peace talks resuming. At the heart of the corruption scandal are allegations
that money has been diverted from key infrastructure projects that are vital to
protecting Ukraine’s energy supplies from Russian attacks,” Haynes said.
The idea that senior officials are “allegedly enriching
themselves at the expense of Ukrainians’ suffering” is “a particularly
poisonous element of the scandal”, she said.
“This scandal is particularly painful for the Ukrainian
people, as the country is currently experiencing severe power outages that have
continued since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion.
A. Yermak, a key ally of V. Zelensky, is often viewed with
controversy in Kyiv. A. Yermak’s opponents say he has used his position to
amass power and influence behind the scenes, deciding who can meet with the
president, and ignoring critical voices.”
Why is Zelensky so unlucky? The U.S. FBI has a permanent
representative in the NABU office in Kyiv, who helps execute international
investigative orders and coordinate actions.
Joint activities: U.S. and Ukrainian authorities sometimes
conduct joint operations and investigations, for example, related to the
control of the use of funds and corruption in public procurement, this is done
by cooperating, rather than taking over completely. It would be good if the
U.S. FBI worked as effectively also in Vilnius and Brussels.
Končitas > Jou, (reader comment):
“As you remember, back in 2018, it seems +-1 year, the
Anti-Corruption Service of Ukraine was established, and direct subordination
was given to Washington by presidential order. Zelensky could not stand this
foreign body near him, so in the summer he tried to liquidate it, but within 1
day he got a standard American Arab Spring and the parliament of the country,
which works transparently, unanimously voted against its own decision made a
week ago. Since then, as Ukraine has been pushing against Washington, new and
more transparent corruption formations of the highest Ukrainian officials have
suddenly appeared.
Don't tell me - and Zelensky's business co-owner Mindičius
just a month ago you believed sacredly. And you sacredly agreed with Yermak
while having breakfast here. But it turns out you were wrong.
Maybe you're wrong somewhere else - you didn't think about
it?”
