“Suzy Welch is no doubt right that today's youth value family less than did past generations ("For Americans, Family Comes First -- or Does It?," op-ed, Nov. 21). One reason: American families have changed. Whereas the total fertility rate in the U.S. in the mid-1950s was around 3.3, it is now 1.6 and falling. The fun and camaraderie of yesterday's large families is the victim of a falling birthrate. Gen Z is looking elsewhere for gratification.
