“Iran warned other countries on Saturday not to join the
United States’ “economic war” against Tehran, saying they would be considered
enemies if they did so.
Washington is urging its allies to join Donald Trump’s new
campaign to isolate Iran’s economy as the US president’s unpopular war nears
its six-month mark.
“We are telling all countries not to join the economic war
being waged by the United States,” Mohsen Rezai, head of Iran’s Supreme
National Security Council, said on state television.
“Any country that participates in imposing economic
restrictions on us is considered an enemy,” he added.
If the countries concerned refuse to distance themselves
from the United States, Iran will harm their interests, he added.
Rezai also stressed that Tehran has more cards in the war,
saying that “we have not yet attacked any US economic interests.”
“So far,
we have only targeted military bases, but if they want to impose economic
sanctions on us, the United States has oil and economic companies around Iran
and elsewhere, and we will hit them,” Rezai threatened.
If Trump “takes action, our counterattack will be like an
earthquake,” he added.
Washington has also called on other governments to join
efforts to isolate Iran’s economy, especially Beijing, one of Iran’s key
strategic partners.
But China has criticized the initiative, saying that US
sanctions will not solve the war in the Middle East.
The United Arab Emirates (UAE), one of Iran’s largest
trading partners, announced on Tuesday that it was suspending all trade and
financial transactions with Tehran until further notice.”
