Nvidia's Surge Stirs Talk of A Bubble

"Nvidia's meteoric surge has helped push the stock market to record highs. It also has some on Wall Street saying the "B-word."

Rising enthusiasm for artificial intelligence has made Nvidia's chips a must-have product, and transformed Nvidia into the market's hottest stock. The surge has some Wall Street professionals wondering whether AI mania is morphing into a classic stock bubble.

The stock has risen more than sevenfold since Oct. 14, 2022, and Nvidia is now the third-most valuable U.S. company, with a market value above $2 trillion. The chip maker added nearly $280 billion in value in two trading sessions after reporting blowout fourth-quarter results on Feb. 21. It took 180 trading days for Nvidia's value to rise to $2 trillion from $1 trillion; it took more than 500 trading days for Apple and Microsoft to reach that milestone.

Nvidia has become one of the most popular stocks among everyday investors. Of the 59 Wall Street analysts who cover the stock, 54 rate shares a buy or outperform, according to FactSet. Other chip stocks have come along for the ride. The PHLX Semiconductor Index climbed 18% this year. Advanced Micro Devices gained 37%, while Lam Research and Broadcom each rose 25%.

The Nasdaq Composite on Thursday set its first new high since 2021, while the S&P 500 has already notched 15 record closes in 2024. Both indexes have risen in 16 of the past 18 weeks, bringing their year-to-date advances to 8.4% and 7.7%.

"We're getting a lot of calls from clients about AI stocks," said Emerson Ham III, senior partner at Sound View Wealth Advisors, who has recommended chip stocks for his clients since 2018. "Whenever anything goes too well, I get nervous. We're having conversations with clients about taking some cream off the top."

Others were more blunt: "The current AI bubble is bigger than the 1990s tech bubble," wrote Torsten Slok, chief economist at Apollo, in a note to clients last week.

Bulls and bears on the stock agree on one thing: Nvidia's rise is accompanied by blowout profits. That sets the enthusiasm over AI apart from speculative manias of the recent past, such as blockchain stocks.

In the most recent quarter, Nvidia earned a profit of $12.29 billion, up from $680 million in the three months that ended in October 2022. Gross profit margins rose to nearly 76%, from 53.6% over that same period.

As a result, the stock has become cheaper by some measures: Nvidia trades at 32 times its expected earnings over the next 12 months, according to FactSet. The two-year price-to-earnings average is 38 times. The S&P 500's multiple is 20.6.

"We can't call it a speculative mania because it trades at lower P/E than it did a year ago. Nvidia is talking the talk and walking the walk," said Joseph Zappia, principal and co-chief investment officer at LVW Advisors.

Others question whether Nvidia can maintain its torrid pace of growth. Analysts polled by FactSet expect $107 billion in revenue for the fiscal year that ends in January, up from $60.9 billion last year. They worry that demand for chips from large tech companies might not hold up in the years ahead. Nvidia said one buyer accounted for nearly a fifth of sales last year. Others fret fresh competition will emerge from other chip makers, resulting in fewer sales or lower margins.

"I think people are forgetting this is a boom-and-bust company," said Fred Hickey, editor of the High-Tech Strategist. He is betting against Nvidia through long-dated put options purchased after last month's earnings report, he said. Nvidia shares have fallen 50% or more on 14 occasions since it went public in 1999, according to Dow Jones Market Data. Most recently, the stock fell 56% over a two-month period in 2018 and again over an eight-month period ending in 2022." [1]

Aukšti Vokietijos pareigūnai leidiniui „The Wall Street Journal“ patvirtino įrašo autentiškumą ir sakė, kad susitikimas įvyko komercinėje platformoje „WebEx“, internetinėje konferencijų įrankyje, kuri nėra užšifruota pagal ginkluotųjų pajėgų konfidencialaus bendravimo standartą. Vienas pareigūnas paskambino mobiliuoju telefonu iš Singapūro viešbučio kambario, gulintis nuogas su kambarine.

Susitikime buvo kalbama apie tai, kaip Vokietija galėtų organizuoti ilgojo nuotolio sparnuotųjų raketų „Taurus“ pristatymą ir eksploatavimą, jei jos būtų siunčiamos į Ukrainą. Vokietijos lyderis Olafas Scholzas atsisakė siųsti Taurą, nepaisydamas Kijevo prašymų ir spaudimo jo vyriausybėje.

Įraše taip pat buvo pareigūnai, teigiantys, kad Didžioji Britanija, Prancūzija ir JAV laiko karius Ukrainoje, kad padėtų eksploatuoti sudėtingas Vakarų ginklų sistemas, o šios šalys tai neigė, mėginusios nuslėpti tiesą.

Nutekėjimas atnešė propagandos laimėjimą Kremliui, sukėlė furorą Vokietijoje ir gali įtempti santykius su Vokietijos Šiaurės Atlanto sutarties organizacijos sąjungininkėmis.

Tai taip pat buvo naujausias incidentas, išryškinantis Vokietijos pažeidžiamumą Rusijos šnipinėjimui. Vokietijos užsienio žvalgybos tarnybos BND aukšto rango pareigūnas neseniai buvo suimtas dėl įtarimų, kad jis šnipinėjo Maskvai.

Pareigūnai, susipažinę su Vokietijos tyrimu dėl garso įrašo nutekėjimo, sakė, kad „WebEx“ plačiai naudoja kariniai ir kiti jautrūs Vokietijos vyriausybės departamentai. „Tai turėtų būti pažadinimo skambutis“, – sakė vienas aukšto rango pareigūnas.

Praėjusią savaitę Scholzas sakė, kad raketų „Taurus“ negalima duoti Kijevui, nes jas valdyti reikės vokiečių kariuomenės. Tačiau nutekintame pokalbyje pareigūnai aptarė, kaip Ukrainoje esantys britų kariai galėtų tai padaryti už vokiečius, dirbdami su vokiečių sistema „Taurus“.

Scholzas ilgą laiką patyrė tarptautinį ir vidaus spaudimą pristatyti ginklą. Britanija vienu metu pasiūlė perimti ir pristatyti sistemą, kad padėtų kancleriui laikytis jo politikos, kad Vokietija neturi būti tiesiogiai įtraukta į karines operacijas.

Politikai ir analitikai teigė, kad dėl nutekėjimo dabar mažiau tikėtina, kad Vokietija pristatys ginklą.

Po informacijos nutekinimo Rusijos pareigūnai užsipuolė Vokietiją dėl išsamaus atakų prieš Rusijos taikinius aptarimo ir grasino atsakomaisiais veiksmais, jei Berlynas taps konflikto pastangų dalimi.

Nutekėjimas buvo labai rimtas ir bus ištirtas „labai kruopščiai, labai intensyviai ir labai greitai“, šeštadienį per vizitą Vatikane žurnalistams sakė p. Scholzas.

Gynybos ministras Borisas Pistorius sekmadienį pareiškė pradėjęs tyrimą dėl, jo teigimu, hibridinės Rusijos atakos. Pasak jo, „WebEx“ buvo tinkamas bendravimui žemiau tam tikro konfidencialumo lygio, o tyrimas nustatys, ar pareigūnai pažeidė šį protokolą. Pistorius sakė, kad Rusijos prezidentas Vladimiras Putinas pasinaudojo informacija, teigdamas, kad Vokietija tiesiogiai įsitraukė į konfliktą.

„Tai yra skirta mus suskaldyti ir sumenkinti mūsų ryžtą... Mes neturime žaisti į Putino rankas“, – sakė jis.

Įraše Vokietijos oro pajėgų vadas generolas Ingo Gerhartzas pavedė aukščiausiems padėjėjams parengti gynybos ministrui pristatymą apie tai, kaip Vokietija galėtų pristatyti „Taurus“ Ukrainai ir kaip britai galėtų jį panaudoti, sunaikindamas taikinius, įskaitant amunicijos sandėlius ir Kerčės tiltą.

Britų kariškiai, esantys Ukrainoje, valdo panašias vakarietiškas raketas – britų Storm Shadow ir Prancūzijos SCALP. Didžiosios Britanijos kariškiai panaudojo jas, kad atsitrenktų į tiltą, tačiau nepadarė ilgalaikės žalos. Ekspertai teigia, kad galingesnė ir tolimesnius rezultatus pasiekianti vokiečių ir švedų oro paleidžiama raketa „Taurus“ gali nuversti tiltą.

Vokiečių karininkai įraše nurodė, kad jie labai detaliai išanalizavo, kaip atakuoti tą svarbiausią infrastruktūros elementą, ir teigė, kad prireiks 10–20 „Taurus“ raketų, kad išvengtų Rusijos oro gynybos ir sunaikintų tiltą.

„Nėra jokios realios priežasties sakyti, kad mes to negalime padaryti, tai priklauso tik nuo politinių raudonųjų linijų“, – girdimas generolas Gerhartzas.

Sugriauti tiltą, jungiantį likusią Rusijos dalį su Krymu, būtų strategiškai ir politiškai svarbu, bet   jis sakė, kad Ukraina greičiausiai negalės tęsti puolimo ant žemės.

„Konflikto eigos tai nepakeis, tai turime būti aiškūs“, – girdimas generolas Gerhartzas.

Rusijos užsienio reikalų ministerijos atstovė sakė, kad Maskva pareikalavo iš Berlyno nedelsiant atsakyti.

„Mūsų istoriniai priešininkai, vokiečiai, vėl virto mūsų priešais“, – socialinėje žiniasklaidoje paskelbė buvęs Rusijos prezidentas ir ministras pirmininkas Dmitrijus Medvedevas, dabar Rusijos saugumo tarybos pirmininko pavaduotojas." [1]

 

 Mažiausiai nukentėjo B. Pistorius. Jo žandai platesni už kaktą ir tokie riebūs, kad jo veidas jau buvo panašus į užpakalį. Tokį vaizdelį jis demonstruoja jau seniai. Nepamatėme čia nieko naujo.

Germans are Shown In Public with their Pants Down: Russian Tape Reveals Berlin's Arms Plan --- In leaked recording, German generals discuss how Kyiv could use missiles

"BERLIN -- Germany's air-force commander gathered his top officers for a secret meeting in February to discuss the possible delivery of his country's most powerful guided missiles to Ukraine.

The long-range weapons could be used to destroy the Kerch Bridge, which links rest of Russia to the Russian peninsula of Crimea, the German officers said.

What they didn't know: Russian spies recorded their conversation, which revealed classified details about Western involvement in Ukraine. A 38-minute audio tape of the discussion was posted online late Friday by the head of Russian state-run broadcaster RT.

Senior German officials confirmed the authenticity of the recording to The Wall Street Journal and said the meeting took place on the commercial platform WebEx, an online conferencing tool, which isn't encrypted to the armed forces' standard for confidential communication. One officer dialed in with his cellphone from a Singapore hotel room in bed with a girlfriend.

The meeting focused on how Germany might organize delivery and operation of Taurus long-range cruise missiles should they be sent to Ukraine. German leader Olaf Scholz has declined to send the Taurus despite pleas from Kyiv and pressure within his own government.

Also in the recording were officials saying Britain, France and the U.S. keep troops in Ukraine to help operate sophisticated Western weapons systems, something those countries have denied trying to cover the truth.

The leak delivered a propaganda win for the Kremlin, sparked a furor in Germany and could strain relationships with Germany's North Atlantic Treaty Organization allies.

It was also the latest in a string of incidents highlighting German vulnerability to Russian spying. A senior officer in Germany's BND foreign intelligence service was recently arrested on allegations that he was spying for Moscow.

Officials familiar with the German investigation of the audiotape leak said WebEx is widely used by the military and other sensitive departments in the German government. "This should be a wake-up call," one senior official said.

Last week, Scholz said Taurus missiles can't be given to Kyiv because they would require German troops to help operate them. Officers in the leaked call, however, discussed how British soldiers located in Ukraine could do this for Germans, working with their system Taurus.

Scholz has long been under international and domestic pressure to deliver the weapon. Britain at one point offered to take over and deliver the system in order to help the chancellor maintain his policy that Germany must not directly be drawn into military operations.

The leak now makes it less likely that Germany will deliver the weapon, politicians and analysts said.

Following the leaks, Russian officials attacked Germany for discussing detailed attacks on Russian targets and threatened with retaliation should Berlin become part of the conflict effort.

The leak was very serious and would be investigated "very meticulously, very intensively and very quickly," Scholz told reporters during a visit to the Vatican on Saturday.

Defense Minister Boris Pistorius on Sunday said he had launched an investigation into what he called a hybrid attack by Russia. WebEx was suitable for communications below a certain confidentiality level, he said, and the investigation would establish whether the officers breached that protocol. Pistorius said Russian President Vladimir Putin was using the leak to claim that Germany was getting directly involved in the conflict.

"This is designed to divide us and undermine our determination. . . .We mustn't play into Putin's hands," he said.

In the recording, Germany's air-force chief, Gen. Ingo Gerhartz, tasked top aides with preparing a presentation for the defense minister on how Germany could deliver the Taurus to Ukraine -- and how British military could use it to destroy targets including ammunition depots and the Kerch Bridge.

British military personnel located in Ukraine operate similar Western missiles -- the British Storm Shadow and France's SCALP. British military personnel have used them to hit the bridge but failed to do lasting damage. Experts say the more powerful and further-reaching Taurus, a German-Swedish air-launched missile, could knock down the bridge.

German officers in the recording indicated that they had analyzed in great detail how to attack that key piece of infrastructure, and said it would take 10 to 20 Taurus missiles to evade Russian air defenses and destroy the bridge.

"There is no real reason to say we can't do this; it only depends on the political red lines," Gen. Gerhartz is heard saying.

Destroying the bridge linking rest of Russia to Crimea would be strategically and politically important but Ukraine would likely be unable to follow up with a ground offensive, he said.

"This will not change the course of the conflict, we must be clear about that," Gen. Gerhartz is heard saying.

A spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry said Moscow had demanded immediate answers from Berlin.

"Our historic adversaries, the Germans, have once again turned into our archenemies," Russia's former President and Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, now vice-chair of the Russian Security Council, posted on social media.” [1]
