Is Lithuania's declaration that China's territory (Taiwan)
doesn't belong to China, a declaration of war against China, or just poetry?
“With US President Donald Trump once again making claims to
Greenland, former Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis says that these
threats should be taken very seriously.
“I think that such threats should be taken seriously and the
European Union should start preparing for what lies ahead. An ultimatum,
unexpected actions are also possible. I think that so far the US administration
has proven that it does not talk idle words, and therefore it is wrong to think
that this time it will somehow pass. I think it will not pass,” G. Landsbergis
commented to Elta on Monday.
According to the former Foreign Minister, the response of
the European Union (EU) in this case is extremely important. One of the ways to
resolve the situation, according to G. Landsbergis, could be the opportunity
for Greenland to become an EU member again.
“The EU has the opportunity to change (the situation –
ELTA). I have reminded you that Greenland is a former EU member (…), but in
1982 it withdrew through a referendum. Perhaps it would be possible to offer,
for example, Greenland, Iceland, Norway, some to return, some to join the EU,”
the former minister said.
“The EU Treaty also has solidarity clauses, so that in the
event of an attack or aggression, we help each other. That would give the EU a
little bit of a clear geopolitical backbone, an understanding that we will
defend what belongs to the EU,” he added.
As reported, on January 4, D. Trump once again reiterated
the US claims to Greenland, which belongs to NATO ally Denmark, stating in an
interview with The Atlantic magazine that “we really need Greenland,
absolutely.”
Responding to such statements by D. Trump, Danish Prime
Minister Mette Frederiksen said that the United States “absolutely has no
right” to annex any part of the Kingdom of Denmark.
She called on the US to “stop threatening a historically
close ally and another country and people who have made it clear that they are
not for sale.”
Support for Denmark, which strongly rejects US claims to
Greenland, was expressed by the Nordic countries. On Monday, France also
expressed solidarity with Denmark.”
