"Walter Russell Mead commends the honor awarded to President Biden by German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier in thanks for strengthening the U.S.-German partnership ("Putin's Rising Price for Peace in Ukraine," Global View, Oct. 22). For Germany, this alliance has been anything but a benefit. Chancellor Gerhard Schroder was able to say no to the debacle in Iraq, and Chancellor Angela Merkel was able to say no to the debacle in Libya. Olaf Scholz, likely the worst German chancellor in post-World War II history, didn't say no to involvement in the war against Ukraine. Germany has only begun to suffer the consequences of that decision.
