U.S. News: RFK Jr. Allows Use Of Some Peptides

“Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is temporarily allowing six unapproved peptides on the market, despite warnings from government scientists that there is not enough evidence to prove they are safe or effective.

In a policy released Wednesday, Kennedy said his department would no longer stop compounding pharmacies from distributing a handful of widely used peptides. The Food and Drug Administration is deciding whether to officially allow them to be compounded -- a decision that could take months. The new policy could make it more difficult for the FDA to restrict peptides in the future.

Many FDA staff aren't supportive of Kennedy's latest decision to lift restrictions on peptides, said two sources familiar with the development.

Peptides are often taken by injection and are marketed for everything from muscle building to recovery, and medically for conditions like ulcerative colitis and insomnia.

None of the buzzy peptides have gone through the FDA approval process. Before this new policy, the FDA didn't allow compounding of these peptides in part because of safety concerns.

Kennedy, who has used peptides himself, said he wants to make peptides broadly accessible to Americans.

Patient-safety groups criticized the agency. "American consumers should not be treated like guinea pigs," said Fred Mills of Americans for Safe and Effective Medicines.” [1]
