"Andrew Michta may need to be reminded of the Monroe Doctrine, the Cuban Missile Crisis and the law of unintended consequences ("Ukraine Needs a Guarantee From NATO," op-ed, Oct. 6). Bringing Ukraine into the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and guaranteeing its security would be similar to when Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev placed missiles in Cuba to secure the Soviet Union's new outpost. America's sphere of influence is the Western Hemisphere, while Russia has a similar sphere.
NATO membership is a bridge too far. Avoiding mutually assured destruction should be top priority in our assessment.
