How are customers being scammed when buying tomatoes?

Based on the information shared by delicatessen owner Adam Badeusz in Radziejow, Poland, customers are being scammed by sellers who substitute cheaper, lower-quality tomatoes for the expensive, premium Rosamunda F1 variety.

Here is how the scam works:

The target: The scam preys on customers seeking the highly prized Rosamunda F1 tomato, known for its antique-like flavor, glossy appearance, and distinct ribbing. These characteristics justify its higher price of more than 20 zlotys (about €4.60) per kilogram.

The substitute: Dishonest sellers replace the genuine Rosamunda F1 with visually similar but cheaper varieties, often from the "sakviet" group.

The deception: The visual similarity between the varieties makes it difficult for a consumer to spot the fake at a glance. The difference in quality and flavor, however, is significant.

Widespread practice: According to Badeusz, this fraudulent practice is not limited to small market traders but is also used by larger stores. He points out that large retail chains are unlikely to stock the real Rosamunda F1 at all because it is an expensive and delicate variety that spoils quickly, making cheaper substitutes more profitable for them.

The profit: By deceiving the customer, sellers can charge a premium price for a cheaper product, increasing their profit margin.
