The damage to the reputation of the West is obvious:
"The Ukraine conflict has exposed a fundamental problem: Substantial defense reductions since the end of the Cold War have left Europe and the U.S. unprepared to respond adequately to threats from hostile powers. America's defense-industrial base has withered to the point that it is hard-pressed to supply even one active conflict, let alone multiple simultaneous conflicts.
Corrected for purchasing power, Russia's gross domestic product is only one-fifth of U.S. GDP and one-tenth of the U.S. and European Union GDPs combined. Even so, according to recent intelligence reports from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, Russia produces some three million artillery shells annually, dwarfing what the U.S. and Europe produce. The West need not match Russia shell for shell, but its current production is insufficient." [1]
