"Ilya Sutskever left Open AI to develop a safe superintelligence. His start-up raised a billion dollars in a financing round.
The new AI start-up Safe Superintelligence of Open AI co-founder Ilya Sutskever has raised a billion dollars in capital from investors.
The money will be used to develop a safe artificial intelligence (AI) that far exceeds human capabilities, Safe Superintelligence (SSI) announced on Wednesday.
The company, which is just three months old and has ten employees, is valued at five billion dollars, according to insiders. SSI's investors include the venture capitalists Andreessen Horowitz and Sequoia Capital. "It is important for us to be surrounded by investors who understand, respect and support our mission," said SSI boss Daniel Gross in an interview.
It consists of spending a few years on research and development before the planned Superintelligence will be brought to market.
First, he will concentrate on hiring top developers and securing computing power for AI training.
Open AI developers also warn of AI risks
Open AI and other companies are working on so-called Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), which can operate largely independently of human intervention. The security of this technology is an important issue in the industry. Critics warn that such AI could get out of control and endanger people. Open AI developers also pointed out the risks last year. Gross, the former head of Apple's AI division, launched SSI together with Sutskever in June, shortly after he left ChatGPT developer OpenAI.
Sutskever played a key role in the dismissal and rehiring of Open AI boss Sam Altman last November. After Altman's return, he was removed from the company's board of directors." [1]
