Chinese AI Models Are Basis of Modern Global Economy. If We Stop Using Them, We Become Stinky Backwater

Companies go into overdrive, if they face competition. If competition is excluded by regulatory capture, companies start rotting.

Chinese AI models are becoming a cornerstone of the modern global economy. Driven by massive "open-weight" releases and extreme cost efficiencies, Chinese systems are quickly capturing international market share as enterprises pivot to cheaper, highly adaptable alternatives.

Chinese AI development directly reshapes global tech economics in several key ways:

Massive Cost Reductions: Leading Chinese platforms (such as Alibaba’s Qwen and DeepSeek) operate at a fraction of the cost of premier Western models, frequently delivering enterprise-grade performance for up to 90% less.

Open-Source Dominance: Because U.S. export controls limit access to advanced computing chips, Chinese developers have pivoted aggressively to open-weight models. These are highly favored by businesses globally who want to run AI workloads locally to ensure data security and prevent vendor lock-in.

Industrial Integration: While the U.S. tech sector focuses heavily on frontier models and Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), China’s "AI Plus" program is designed to embed artificial intelligence deeply into 90% of its physical economy, manufacturing, robotics, and healthcare.

Global Developer Adoption: Platforms like OpenRouter highlight that Chinese open-weight systems frequently account for a substantial plurality of weekly global token usage by corporate developers seeking to trim operational budgets.

“Silicon Valley and Washington are debating a multibillion-dollar question: Should U.S. companies be able to use Chinese artificial-intelligence models?

OpenAI and Anthropic executives are sounding the alarm about the rise of cheap AI, particularly powerful new models produced in China, suggesting they will lead to a "dystopian" AI future and present unacceptable security risks without regulation.

Some analysts who study the AI industry said the two companies, which are preparing for public listings in the next year, just want to eliminate the competition.

The emergence of highly capable, open autonomous AI systems -- including Moonshot AI's Kimi K3 model and Alibaba's Qwen 3.8 Max, which were released in recent days and viewed favorably by investors and users -- has turned the AI race on its head once again. Kimi K3 also was competitive with U.S. models on some benchmarks.

The debate over the new models, which are "open weight," allowing users to download and customize them with company data and for specific tasks, coincides with division in the Trump administration about whether to take steps to limit the use of the models in the U.S.

"One probable outcome of an open-weight-model-dominant world is full AI communism, which is precisely what China proposes: rather than a market product, AI is a 'public good' which will ultimately be provided by the state as a kind of 'digital public infrastructure,'" Dean Ball, OpenAI's head of strategic futures, said in an X post Friday.

Ball, a former Trump administration official, called such a scenario a "dystopian hellscape" and said he expected the Trump administration to make moves to reduce the usage of open source models. Ball later clarified that he wasn't advocating for the U.S. government to discourage Chinese AI.

He also highlighted a central challenge with the AI race: Top-tier AI companies raise billions of dollars to pay for the vast computing resources needed to continue improving AI systems. If everyone uses AI systems that people largely don't pay for, there would be no way to finance continued frontier AI development.

Ball, who started at the company earlier this month and focuses on policy strategy, and OpenAI have said his comments don't reflect the company's official positions. The company has developed its own open models, and CEO Sam Altman has previously said OpenAI's past approach of only developing closed tools was unwise.

Other top AI executives have warned that open models present huge risks, since developers and policymakers lack control over how they are used or modified.

Anthropic Chief Executive Dario Amodei for years has warned about the risks of powerful and open AI systems, saying in a recent Bloomberg interview that having AI models with advanced cybersecurity capabilities that are free to download could be harmful. "It's a serious concern," he said in June.

Usage of Chinese models, which are far cheaper than U.S. counterparts, is surging at U.S. companies, prompting some investors to question the staying power of top model-makers such as Anthropic and OpenAI.

The current U.S. open-source model frontier is starting to catch up with China's. Last Wednesday, Thinking Machines Lab -- led by former OpenAI technology chief Mira Murati -- released its first AI model as open weight. Nvidia's Nemotron 3 Ultra is starting to see traction, and Reflection AI, an Nvidia-backed open model developer, has close ties to the Trump administration and plans to release its first model later this year.

The market's faith in Anthropic and OpenAI continuing to build more capable models that push the AI frontier has been at the heart of the boom, helping to justify trillions of dollars in spending on infrastructure in the coming years. The threat that new players will vastly undercut what they can charge for advanced AI pushed down some tech and AI company stock prices last week.

David Sacks, a venture capitalist and White House AI adviser, suggested that he read Ball's post as a confession to a "regulatory capture strategy." Sacks and others have long seen calls for AI regulation by companies such as Anthropic as efforts to use new laws and policies to stymie competitors.

"The weaponization of regulatory uncertainty as a competitive tool should be completely unacceptable," Sacks said in an X post on Sunday.

Security-focused administration officials in the past year have considered many measures to crack down on Chinese AI companies developing open models, people familiar with the discussions said.

They have weighed adding the businesses to trade blacklists, security warnings on Chinese AI companies and a potential executive order targeting open models, the people said, adding that disagreement within the administration has prevented any such action.

That tension has also delayed implementation of a recent executive order asking companies to give the administration early access to their most powerful models up to 30 days before they are released. The CEOs of OpenAI, Anthropic and Alphabet's DeepMind have recently signaled they support increasing government oversight of AI as models become popular, fueling some criticism that the companies are trying to stifle their competition. Alphabet is the parent company of Google.

Congress restricted the use of Chinese model DeepSeek on federal and defense networks because of security and privacy concerns last year, but lawmakers and the administration have stopped short of imposing other restrictions.

One challenge is that smaller model-makers -- including several Chinese companies -- use a technique called distillation in which they harvest the capabilities of the top U.S. tools.

Officials who have pushed for oversight of AI have worried that open models could pose cyber and biological weapons risks if they continue advancing and don't have to follow the same rules as top U.S. companies such as Anthropic and OpenAI, the people said.

The new focus on the issue shows how the messy policies surrounding open models are challenging CEOs trying to cut their AI bills and policymakers who don't want the technology used to harm the U.S.” [1]

Did China block access to China's best AI models?

No, China has not completely blocked access, but authorities are actively considering or in the early stages of enforcing curbs to restrict overseas access to its most powerful AI models.Chinese regulators and the Ministry of Commerce have held meetings with major tech firms (including Alibaba and ByteDance) to discuss options like geo-blocking APIs or limiting unreleased models strictly for domestic use. These discussions come as Beijing increasingly views advanced artificial intelligence as a strategic national asset.

„IBM prekiavo kaip Claude'as, nužudęs Watsoną“, – antradienį X juokavo Kenas Wattana, dirbtinio intelekto agentų bendrovės „Conto“ įkūrėjas.

IBM CEO Has Nowhere to Hide From AI

“The problem for IBM Chief Executive Arvind Krishna is that things are going too fast and too slow -- all at the same time -- and he is stuck in the middle. That's a bad place to be in the artificial-intelligence revolution.

Krishna bet big on a hybrid-cloud approach in response to the rise of hyperscalers and has long sold investors on IBM's role in quantum computing -- a next-generation technology he says is three to five years away.

It's hard to imagine IBM in three years, let alone five, if it has too many more days like this past week.

The stock dropped 25% Tuesday after IBM warned second-quarter results would be far worse than expected. This showed AI isn't only jeopardizing IBM's software business, it is making it harder to sell its legacy offerings in an information-technology market where the new technology is reprioritizing corporate spending away from Big Blue.

It's the sort of bad dream terrifying plenty of CEOs these days as they try to navigate the revolution. While the biggest tech companies' cloud businesses have helped position them to adapt to AI, many, like Krishna, find themselves trying to manage legacy businesses even as they struggle to keep pace with emerging, pure-play rivals.

It's a familiar story that has repeatedly played out in other sectors during prior tech waves. Media, music and cars spring to mind. They all showed that a middle-ground strategy is tough to pull off. Many try, few thrive.

IBM's current predicament is especially galling given it was once at the forefront of AI with Watson, a natural-language computer processing system that won "Jeopardy!" Big Blue squandered that lead, languished in the following years and today is far, far behind the likes of AI leaders such as Anthropic, which created leading model Claude and is chasing the kinds of corporate customers that once made IBM so dominant.

"IBM trading like Claude murdered Watson," Ken Wattana, founder of an AI agentic company called Conto, joked on X Tuesday.

The stock fell harder than it did in the 1987 Black Monday stock-market crash.

For a while, Krishna, an IBM lifer, seemed to be pulling off the middle-ground balancing act. He used his army of consultants to help clients navigate AI while positioning the company to milk its legacy mainframe and software businesses and to offer more tailored AI products.

He essentially bet that corporate clients running critical programs on their own mainframes purchased from IBM couldn't or wouldn't migrate to remote data centers offered by Amazon, Google and Microsoft.

Instead, Krishna believed his customers would jump at being able to straddle the two worlds. They would gain cloud-computing-like capabilities while keeping certain digital needs in-house. And IBM would be the bridge making this happen.

It was initially a hard sell to investors, but Krishna was well suited for it. There's something almost statesmanlike about the executive. His manners, his dress, his demeanor.

He even managed to turn a potential liability -- at 63 years old, he is older by decades than the executives running emerging rivals -- into a selling point. Those extra years, Krishna argued to me in an interview last summer, give him insight into how tech cycles work -- the ups and the downs.

"AI is in the first innings," he said then. "It's still early to see how the game works out and how it goes along."

Investors eventually came around. Before this past week, IBM shares had more than doubled since Krishna was named CEO in 2020. That growth pales in comparison with Apple, Alphabet and other tech giants. But it was encouraging to some investors given IBM's struggles the prior decade.

And Krishna showed he could weather a storm.

In February, Anthropic announced the creation of an AI tool that can rewrite Cobol computer code into a modern language. This seemingly blew a hole in the moat around IBM's legacy business and Krishna's hybrid strategy. The stock had what would be its worst day in 25 years -- until this week.

Krishna suggested the market had overreacted in February. "I actually think that we were hit in a way that was unfair," he said on the Norges Bank Investment Management podcast weeks later.

His argument: Rival software companies were at risk to AI while the role of handling client databases and key business functions -- presumably IBM's role -- would remain valuable in the years to come.

But he understood investors' angst. "To give full credit to investors, they're saying, 'Look, I can't decide today, who are the few who might benefit. If I can't determine that, I'll take the sector down and then over time that'll determine itself based on the numbers that you print,'" Krishna said.

He was correct for a while. A pair of announcements about AI and quantum computing in May helped IBM shares not only recover from their February swoon, but reach new heights in June.

One of those announcements included IBM and the Commerce Department detailing plans to invest billions of dollars to help fund a quantum chip foundry. This would produce the silicon wafers needed to make quantum-computing processors.

IBM has spent decades working on the idea of quantum computing, getting increasingly more serious in the past 10 years. Krishna is targeting 2029 to deliver the first large-scale quantum computer. The technology uses quantum physics to perform calculations that today's computers can't even approach. The potential for discoveries in material science, healthcare and beyond are staggering.

Krishna has staked a lot of IBM's future on the belief that quantum will unlock the same kind of growth potential that was seen with GPU chips. Those chips popularized by Nvidia have been at the heart of the new AI race, powering much of the advances and, in turn, making that tech company among the most valuable in the world.

But some believe the technology won't be commercially viable for 10 years or more, far longer than Krishna is hoping.

In the meantime, investors are left with, in Krishna's own words, "the numbers that you print." Suddenly, for IBM and Krishna, there's no middle ground in those.” [1]

Abu auginame sodininkystę šiaurės rytų vietose, todėl, pavyzdžiui, česnakai jau paruošti derliui, be to, laikas paskutinę morkų sėją.

A Methodic Way to Keep the Vegetables Coming: In the Garden

“An organic farmer reveals his system for sowing seeds, mapping crops and keeping your favorite lettuces, carrots and radishes sprouting from summer into winter.

I’ve ordered a packet of Hakurei salad turnip seeds, and the newly installed calendar app on my phone has been informed of what I’ll need to do with them and when, so it can remind me.

Admittedly, neither salad turnips nor digital calendaring (make mine paper, please) is my usual fare. But after an advance look at Jean-Martin Fortier’s first book geared to gardeners — not his usual farming audience — I’m rethinking things. My subsequent conversation with the Quebec-based organic farmer only deepened that inclination.

“In Your Garden: The Complete Guide to Home Vegetable Gardening” won’t be published until September. To harvest more homegrown edibles through fall into early winter — and while we’re at it, gather insights into fine-tuning future growing tactics — the time to act starts today.

In just over 20 years, Mr. Fortier has popularized his method of small-scale, highly efficient market farming, or market gardening — human-scale agriculture on a largely direct-to-consumer model. His two how-to manuals, “The Market Gardener” and “The Winter Market Gardener,” have sold more than 300,000 copies; 10,000-plus farmers have taken his professional grower training, and his YouTube channel has more than 120,000 subscribers.

In all of it, method is the operative word, because Mr. Fortier exhorts farmers, and now gardeners, to think methodically.

“Shifting from hobby gardening to truly feeding your household requires structure and planning,” he writes. “There’s no way around it.”

Ideally, we would have started the growing season with a crop map — a plan for what goes where, including initial plantings and follow-up ones, or successions. When strategically executed, successions mean “you get two, three, four times the amount of vegetables per year,” Mr. Fortier said.

After the Garlic, the Carrots

We both garden in Northeastern locations, so about now, the garlic is ready to harvest, for instance, and it’s also time for a last carrot sowing. Sow seed where the garlic grew, he said, and if you mulched your garlic with straw, leave it to use on the carrots later, “and they’ll be harvested all the way till Christmas.” His favorites are sweet Nantes-type varieties.

It’s likewise about last call here to direct sow another row of bush beans, perhaps where summer lettuce is waning, or fall peas (a short-stature variety will mature about a week earlier than a tall one).

If this year’s succession plan had been firmed up ahead of time and I had sown seeds, I would have young transplants of broccoli, cauliflower, kale and cabbage headed soon to spots that are about to come empty in the garden. Next year, I’ll start some in June for transplanting 30 days later.

Mr. Fortier is a fan of daikon and other winter radishes, but doesn’t direct sow them. He starts a range of them — from traditional white to the colorful watermelon radish, plus the black radish — in cell trays in June instead. After a month they are transplanted out, which ensures perfect spacing: four inches apart within 10-inch-apart rows. His young plants are covered with insect netting or a row cover for pest control, as are all Brassica family members.

I probably have another couple of weeks to direct sow more beets; mesclun and other lettuces offer a longer window, into early September.

Be prepared with row-cover fabric for when frosts threaten late-season sowings, but not the extra-thick version. Mr. Fortier keeps two regular-weight layers (such as Agribon 19) on hand instead. “You can put one on in October,” he said, “and then if it’s really cold mid-November, you can put a second one over it.”

In early September I’ll sow that Hakurei turnip, a sweet white variety that “doesn’t taste like a turnip,” he said, to enjoy raw. Until mid-September, even up north, Asian greens like tatsoi and bok choy, as well arugula, can be sown. With spinach, Mr. Fortier waits until late August or early September, and enjoys it until Christmas. (I’ve gathered some regional vegetable gardening calendars for help scheduling succession dates nearer you.)

For late-season successions, remember: Shorter days loom. To take this into account, many growers add 10 days or so to the days-to-harvest listed on seed packets, backing up to an earlier start.

Raised Beds — But Not Like You Think

The foundation for Mr. Fortier’s plan of continued harvests is growing in permanent raised beds, but not raised by wood or corrugated-metal walls. They are raised “with a shovel,” he said, to form 30-inch-wide rectangular strips of soil four to six inches high by digging out 18-inch-wide pathways between.

“Working from a standardized bed width really, really moves the needle,” he said, “and it makes it so simple to organize and orchestrate and calculate things.”

His book includes charts showing how each crop fits that 30-inch metric, and likewise continuing down the row, how each forms its own grid-like pattern. “From what I’ve seen, people are planting with no real patterns,” Mr. Fortier said, “but you need a pattern.”

There is one inch between carrots within rows that are six inches apart, for example; beets are two and a half inches apart with 10 inches between rows, mesclun two and six. It may look tighter than what you’re doing now; that’s also part of the method.

“Everything starts with better crop spacing,” he said of his bio-intensive system, “because what’s on the seed packages today, for me, it doesn’t make any sense. It’s not optimized in any way or shape.”

Other benefits of the 30-inch beds: You can work by hand from either side, and step across without ever stepping onto the soil of the beds, which are managed with tools that fit the scale of the no-till plots.

Mr. Fortier’s standby: his broadfork, which loosens soil deeply with multiple long tines without turning it over.

Weeding has likewise been rethought. “Don’t weed, cultivate. Don’t weed cultivate. I could say it over and over and over,” he said. The U-shaped blade of a stirrup hoe, when pulled in either direction, slices just below the surface, cutting weeds at the root, but also loosening and aerating the topmost soil layer.

Making Room for Green Manure

An essential succession to accommodate: green manure, or cover crops, “plants you grow not to harvest but to nourish the soil itself,” writes Mr. Fortier.

“If you grow a crop in a bed that had a cover crop prior and one that didn’t, you can see the difference,” Mr. Fortier said. Summer is a great time to sow them, perhaps a mix like field peas with oats.

“If you have a few beds that are free, get the seeds and just scatter them over the bed and then rake them in, and that’s it,” he said. “You’re preparing for next year in a smart way.”

Here again, no tilling. After its run, cut the green manure down with a weed-whacker, use the broadfork to open the soil a bit, then shovel some soil from the aisles over the remains and top it with a dark tarp that excludes light.

“Come back in two, three weeks, and it’s all gone,” Mr. Fortier said. “It’s digested because you’ve put some soil over it and because you’ve opened up the soil to bring oxygen,” he said. “That’s going to activate microorganisms; they’re going to be excited and come and chew it up. It’s amazing.”

Noted in my new calendar app, as per Mr. Fortier: Sow some amazement, wherever space allows.” [1]
