China’s AI Models Are Catching Up: New AI models from the People’s Republic are keeping pace with OpenAI and Anthropic. This is shaking up the stock markets.

“The company currently on everyone’s lips—and moving the stock prices of the world’s largest corporations—is remaining silent. "We have a policy prohibiting us from answering questions from the media," says a Moonshot AI employee. She is standing at the Beijing-based startup’s booth at the World AI Conference in Shanghai, China’s premier trade fair and conference for artificial intelligence.

After months of relative quiet in China’s AI scene—during which attention shifted to developments in the US—the Middle Kingdom is signaling its intent to shape the global future of AI with a flurry of announcements.

Surrounding the Shanghai AI conference—which President Xi Jinping opened in person for the first time on Friday—first Moonshot AI and then the Hangzhou-based giant Alibaba caused a stir with their respective models.

In comparisons on AI testing platforms like Artificial Analysis and Arena-AI, Moonshot’s "Kimi K3" model performs almost on par with the top models from Anthropic and OpenAI.

In certain areas, such as web development, Arena-AI even ranks the Chinese model ahead of its US competitors.

Demand was so high that Moonshot temporarily stopped accepting new subscribers due to capacity constraints.

Alibaba’s "Qwen 3.8 Max" model also met with a positive initial reception, though it has not yet undergone the same level of rigorous testing.

Alibaba’s stock price rose by more than five percent at one point on Monday, closing nearly four percent higher.

Moonshot AI is not yet publicly traded, but according to consistent reports from news agencies Bloomberg and Reuters, it plans to launch an initial public offering (IPO) in the coming months. The company is currently valued at around $30 billion.

The new models underscore the dynamic nature of the Chinese AI sector. In the first half of the year, the Beijing-based company Zhipu AI was a market darling, with its share price at one point having risen more than twentyfold since its initial public offering in early January. However, faced with displays of strength from domestic rivals, it has since lost two-thirds of its value—dropping nearly half since the start of the AI conference alone. Some analysts also consider a significant drop in valuations likely for OpenAI and Anthropic, both of which are also aiming for an IPO. Shares of AI chip developer Nvidia fell by around five percent at one point on Friday.

The situation in the AI industry thus mirrors that of other sectors, such as the automotive and solar industries. Active Chinese industrial policy has spawned a large number of companies that are engaged in fierce competition and are putting Western rivals under pressure.

In his opening address at the trade fair, President Xi underscored China’s ambition to shape the future of artificial intelligence. Beijing brought together 29 countries from the Global South—including most BRICS nations, though notably excluding India—under the umbrella of a new Shanghai-based body called the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization. According to observers, Beijing aims to secure a market for its AI technology through this initiative. These countries also play a key role as buyers of Chinese products in the automotive sector.

For instance, a company called RJGF, which operates data centers in southern China, showcased its services at the trade fair held alongside the conference. Company representatives explained that businesses in Southeast Asia could utilize these facilities at a low cost; data would be transmitted—for example, from Malaysia to Nanning, the capital of the Guangxi Autonomous Region—for processing. The most important region for thE representative at the digital giant’s booth stated that Southeast Asia is Alibaba Cloud’s primary market outside China, noting that they mainly serve Chinese corporations expanding into the region.

At the trade fair itself, however, the race to develop ever-better models was not the dominant theme.

Instead, the focus at most booths was on productive applications and AI agents—AI programs capable of acting autonomously.

In addition to health apps designed to detect tumors and assist in managing chronic diseases, Alibaba showcased glasses that display live translations and recording devices that generate improved meeting notes. Huawei highlighted its chip technology as well as solutions for the financial, energy, and mining sectors and for call centers. Tencent presented AI agents intended for integration into WeChat, its app that is ubiquitous in China.

The humanoid robots frequently seen in China—a key sector under the new five-year plan were located this year in a less central hall on the upper floor, where around 100 companies showcased humanoid robots. The verdict of some visitors interviewed by the F.A.Z. was rather sobering: there was hardly any progress compared to the previous year.” [1]

Westerners Are Captivated by High-Quality, Low-Cost Chinese Vehicles—Produced Using Cheap Russian Energy—And the Influx of Chinese Trucks Is Even Alarming EU Manufacturers: "They Are Almost Too Good."

"Chinese manufacturers have trucks ready to roll on European roads, and they are far cheaper than those of their competitors. The battleground has now shifted to service networks. Maintenance and repair networks currently serve as the primary line of defense for Western manufacturers. The only question is: for how long? 'We are thinking long-term and building an entire ecosystem,' says Stella Li, Vice President of the Chinese conglomerate BYD."

At IAA Transportation—Europe’s largest commercial vehicle trade fair in Hanover, Germany—a bus bearing the slogan "BYD loves IAA" glides silently by. The appeal of the Chinese manufacturers' push into Europe is undeniable. Moreover, there were far more of them at the September exhibition than ever before, writes Karin Olander in the Swedish business publication *Dagens industri* (Di).

Out of more than 1,500 exhibitors, over 300 were from China. They are challenging European rivals by leveraging cheap energy and the economies of scale gained from massive sales in their domestic market. Electrification is already well-established there—one in three trucks sold in the country features an electric powertrain. "In Europe, this figure stands at just over 2%."

That won't last long. In Germany, the AfD is already coming to power, promising to supply us with cheap Russian energy again.

Fabulously Delicious Chebureki: A Thin, Crispy Crust and a Juicy Meat Filling (the Second Shot of Vodka Is for the Cook)

"Vakarų ekspresas"

Recipe

These chebureki entice you with their beautiful golden color and an incredibly thin, crispy crust. It seems to lock the meat juices inside, making every bite a true delight.

You will need for the scalded dough: 500 g high-quality wheat flour; 250 ml boiling water; 2 tablespoons oil; 1 tablespoon vodka; ½ teaspoon salt. For the juicy filling: 400 g mixed ground meat; 300 g onions—this is crucial; 100 ml ice-cold water or crushed ice; salt and spices to taste.

Making the chebureki: Sift the flour into a large bowl and make a well in the center. Add the salt, oil, and vodka. Immediately pour in the boiling water and mix vigorously—first with a spatula, then by hand. Wrap the ball of dough in plastic wrap and let it rest for 30 minutes. While the dough rests, prepare the filling. Peel the onions and blend them or grate them using the finest grater to obtain a smooth consistency. ...mixture. Mix the onion purée with the ground meat and season with salt and freshly ground pepper. The key secret to a juicy filling is ice-cold water; pour it into the meat mixture and stir or beat vigorously. The prepared filling should be quite loose—similar in consistency to homemade sour cream.

Divide the rested choux pastry into pieces roughly the size of a large egg. Roll each piece out very thinly into a nearly translucent circle. Place a spoonful of the meat filling on one half of the dough and spread it evenly. Fold the other half of the dough over, carefully press out any trapped air with your fingers, and seal the edges tightly. To reinforce the seal, you can crimp the edge with the tines of a fork. Pour a generous amount of refined oil into a frying pan—the *chebureki* should float freely in it. Heat the oil well and add the *chebureki* one at a time. Fry over medium heat for about 2–3 minutes on each side until beautifully browned. Why does the dough become so crispy? An interesting ingredient in this recipe is vodka. When heated, alcohol evaporates faster than water; upon hitting the hot oil, the vapors expand rapidly, helping the dough form layers from within. This gives the *chebureki*... ...numerous tiny, crispy bubbles form on the surface, and the dough absorbs less oil. The result is an incredibly thin, crispy, bubbly crust with a juicy meat filling inside.”

Pasakiškai gardūs čeburekai: plona, traški plutelė ir sultingas mėsos įdaras (antras šaukštas degtinės - virėjui)

 „Vakarų ekspresas“

Receptas

Dėl to čeburekų paviršiuje susidaro daugybė smulkių traškių burbuliukų, o tešla mažiau sugeria aliejaus.

Refusal to Buy Cheap Russian Energy Is Killing Eurozone: Industrial Resilience Falters in Eurozone

High energy costs are severely straining Eurozone industrial resilience, forcing consecutive contractions in manufacturing output as the bloc enters a challenging winter.

The phaseout of cheap Russian pipeline gas since 2022 has left the region structurally exposed to volatile global markets.

This vulnerability has been acutely magnified by a massive new energy shock stemming from the Iran war and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which has driven European gas prices up by roughly 50%.

The economic fallout is highly visible across the Eurozone's heavy industry and automotive sectors. Prominent industrial icons like Volkswagen have announced sweeping cost-cutting measures and up to 50,000 job cuts in Germany due to collapsing profits and uncompetitive domestic energy pricing.

European energy-intensive industrial electricity prices average roughly double those of the United States, creating an intense long-term competitive disadvantage that is driving some production to relocate outside the EU.

Industrial Output on a Downward Trend

According to the latest Eurostat data, Eurozone industrial production fell by 0.5% in August 2026 compared to July, marking its third consecutive monthly decline. On a year-over-year basis, output is down 1.1%.

While some high-tech sectors—such as Dutch semiconductor machinery manufacturing—and computer/electronic segments continue to show strength, traditional automotive and chemical output have dropped sharply, dragging down the overall Eurozone index.

The Cost of the Russian Disconnection

Estimates regarding the total price tag of severing ties with Russian energy vary depending on the source, but the financial burden is undeniably immense:

•     The €3 Trillion Claim: Russian diplomatic missions state total economic losses for the EU from the break could eventually reach €3 trillion ($3.4 trillion) due to price hikes, lower living standards, and factory closures.

•           The Energy Bill Trade-off: Analysis from the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA) notes that EU countries have paid Russia approximately €238.4 billion for fossil fuels since February 2022. Despite massive efforts to scale back, Brussels acknowledges that total phaseout will not be fully executed until 2027.

A Faltering Transition and Winter Risks

A critical report from the European Court of Auditors warns that the EU's "REPowerEU" strategy is faltering due to a severe investment deficit. Member states have allocated less than a fifth of the €300 billion in available EU funds intended to finance the clean energy transition.

Consequently, the Eurozone is entering the winter heating season with gas storage levels dangerously low—sitting at around 65% to 67% full, compared to over 80% at the same time last year. EU leaders are now urgently calling on the European Commission to introduce coordinated, temporary financial relief to shield foundational industries from collapsing under the weight of this prolonged price squeeze.

AfD is waiting for elections. AfD is calling to resume buying cheap Russian energy.

“Eurozone industrial output declined again in August under the weight of lingering energy-price concerns as the war in the Middle East continued to flare.

Industrial production fell 0.5% from the previous month, following a downwardly revised 0.3% decline in July, the statistics agency Eurostat said on Thursday. August's reading was below a consensus of economists polled by The Wall Street Journal, which expected output to rise 0.2%.

The fall in activity compounds a tough few months for the industrial sector in the region.

After a surprisingly resilient response to the outbreak of war in Iran, production across the 21-nation euro area has now declined for three consecutive months, raising concern that high energy costs and extreme weather are putting the brakes on momentum.

While production rebounded somewhat in Germany, the eurozone's largest economy, following a steep decline in July, output fell back in France, Italy and Spain.

"Industry may not be immune to higher energy prices and global uncertainty after all," said Bert Colijn, an economist at ING.

August's reading comes despite signs of confidence among eurozone manufacturers, who have remained upbeat.

Purchasing managers' indexes for July through September showed manufacturing sentiment rising sequentially to its highest level since May 2022.

But rising energy costs continue to pile pressure on factory margins, while also complicating the outlook for interest rates. In September, the rate of industrial input cost and output price inflation rose to its highest level since May.

Output is expected to pick up again in September, boosted by an anticipated rebound in vehicle production, said Megan Fisher, an economist at Capital Economics.” [1]
