"Finland and Sweden have also both joined NATO since the Ukraine conflict began -- a move Putin criticized in his interview on Wednesday.
"We had fairly good relations, stable relations with these countries," Putin said. "I think that they benefited more from the fact that they adhered to neutrality, because this provides certain advantages, at least as a negotiating platform in order to reduce tensions in Europe itself."
The Russian leader said that for Finland, joining NATO was "an absolutely senseless step from the point of view of ensuring one's own national interests." Moscow never had troops stationed on its border with Finland, "but now we will," Putin said. "There were no systems of destruction there, but now there will be."" [1]
