"The commander of the Lithuanian army, General Raimundas
Vaikšnoras, said in an interview with the LRT portal that if there is a war,
the situation would be terrible.
"Every person can be a supporter or helper of the
army," R. Vaikšnoras told the LRT portal. According to R. Vaikšnoras, it
would be much more beneficial for the army if there were no civilians on the
front line. In this case, soldiers would not need to protect them, take care of
their evacuation and could concentrate on direct work. However, according to
the army commander, there are many important tasks in the rear that someone
must perform so that soldiers can fight successfully. Fighting saboteurs,
protecting strategic objects and simply performing ordinary work functions in
order to ensure the functioning of energy facilities, water supply, food
production and other vital functions for the country.
According to the general, every person is a weapon defending
the state. "Whoever can, cooks food, bandages wounds, carries ammunition,
if necessary. The more people we have performing different functions, the
stronger we will be. And again, it acts as a deterrent," said R.
Vaikšnoras.
R. Vaikšnoras emphasized that if all civilians fled the country,
the situation would not bode well either. It's good, there are shootings,
raids, explosions, there are few civilian deaths, but how will we replenish,
how will we compensate for the losses? Because there will be our losses too, ditches will be full of corpses. I
say this very responsibly, I won't beat around the bush, we will have losses.
We will have to compensate for those losses. And not only men, but also women,
perhaps, will have to compensate," the general said."
