Let's Deradicalize Parenting

“It's unfortunate that child rearing, like so many other things in our society, seeks extremes ("Don't Fool Around With 'FAFO Parenting'" by Erica Komisar, op-ed, Aug. 8). FAFO is an extreme backlash against the type of parenting perceived to have produced a generation of adults incapable of functioning in the real world. Ms. Komisar is right that we need to strike a balance.

For what it's worth, in raising our own kids my wife and I created an effective, balanced, common-sense approach based not on rules but on three principles.

Treat everyone with respect.

Whatever you undertake, give it your best effort.

You, and only you, are accountable for your actions.

Though the social context changed as our kids matured, we encountered few situations that couldn't be brought back to one or more of these principles. They were simple and easy to understand, clearly communicated our expectations and required our kids to think for themselves.
