“Having covered a distance of 250 kilometers in 2022, Soleil demonstrated the first fully autonomous ship navigation system. It is a huge ferry, weighing about 15.5 thousand tons, capable of carrying more than one and a half hundred people, 30 cars and more than one and a half hundred trucks. It became the first ship longer than 200 meters to complete the journey completely autonomously. Built by the shipyard Mitsubishi Shipbuilding, Soleil used radar sensors and infrared video cameras to cross the Sea of Japan at a speed of about 48 kilometers per hour and successfully avoided all possible obstacles. The infrared cameras allowed the ship to “see” even in the dark – it converts the heat emitted by its environment into an image.”
