How did Georgia's dreams of NATO and EU membership come to a shattering end?

“In 2007, at the Munich Security Conference, Mr. Putin warned against NATO expansion into former Soviet lands. Western leaders largely dismissed his admonition as mere venting, and in April of 2008, NATO promised eventual membership to Ukraine and Georgia. Some three months later, Mr. Putin laid a trap for Georgia that ended with an invasion. Russia crushed the republic's small, U.S.-trained military and brought its troops to within 30 miles of Tbilisi. Georgia's dreams of NATO and EU membership came to a shattering end. Fourteen years later, Western leaders face the uncomfortable question of whether Ukraine is facing a similar fate.” [1]
