"Ukrainian drivers stuck at the border due to protests by
Polish carriers plan to go on hunger strike if the situation does not improve.
An agreement was reached yesterday that Polish carriers
would allow 7 trucks per hour, but it did not work for a long time, Romanas
Vlasiuk, a driver at the border, told Radio Liberty.
Ukrainian drivers demand an increase in the frequency of
crossing the border to 14 trucks per hour. Now, they say, only one is going through.
About 200 Ukrainian drivers went to the border to talk to
Polish protesters, but were stopped by the police. In the end, two Ukrainian
drivers were left to negotiate with their Polish colleagues, writes
"Unian".
"Our demands are to allow all the cars that were
supposed to go at night according to the agreement "7 cars per hour"
to one exit, as well as to increase it to 14 cars per hour. If our conditions
are not met, we officially declare a hunger strike. We refuse the help of
volunteers. We only switch to water and tea," said R. Vlasiukas.
In addition, according to him, yesterday the Polish
transport inspectorate started punishing Ukrainian drivers for schedule
violations.
VŽ wrote that Polish carriers have been blocking border
checkpoints with Ukraine since November 6. The protests that have taken hold
are clogging a transportation artery that is vital for this country. These actions also stop cargo transit
traveling through Lithuania.
In addition, Slovak carriers join the blockade of the
Ukrainian border and promise to block the only checkpoint through which heavy
transport enters Ukraine."
