Rheinmetall CEO Papperger Mocks Ukrainian Drones

“Made by housewives with 3D printers: The Rheinmetall CEO sees no particular innovative potential in Ukrainian drones.

Armin Papperger, CEO of the defense contractor Rheinmetall, has sparked a stir with his remarks regarding the innovative capabilities of the Ukrainian defense industry. The controversy stems from an article in the US magazine *The Atlantic*. The author had accompanied Papperger and discussed with him, among other topics, the innovative potential of Ukraine’s nascent drone manufacturers. In response, Papperger stated: ‘It’s Ukrainian housewives.’ He claimed they have 3D printers in their kitchens and are producing parts for drones. ‘That is not innovation.’”

Most important parts of these drones, using rare earths, are produced in China. Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger sparked controversy by describing Ukrainian drone production as "housewives" using 3D printers, dismissing it as lack of innovation. While triggering a backlash and a #MadeByHousewives response, the remarks highlighted reliance on foreign components, with analysis showing substantial dependence on Chinese-produced rare earths for drone magnets.
