"Albinas
Januška, the signatory of the Act of Independence of Lithuania, criticized the
members of the Seimas, who, according to him, did not properly assess the
results of the NATO summit in Vilnius. According to A. Januška, according to
the resolution signed by the members of the Seimas in April, the Alliance
summit was a failure for Lithuania regarding the Ukraine issue.
"What happens
when there is no strategic discipline in the state?" Neither in actions
nor in action comments? Can we still be surprised that the members of the
Lithuanian Seimas vote for one thing, and then do and say the opposite?"
A. Januška comments on his Facebook account.
"In this
case, it is about the reactions of some members of the Seimas (and not only the
opposition) to the non-invitation of Ukraine to NATO in the context of the
Seimas resolution. One vote is taken, followed by another discussion and
evaluation. The president does not mention it, almost all political
commentators also ignore it without exception", criticizes the signatory.
He recalls the
points of the resolution unanimously adopted at the beginning of April
regarding Lithuania's main goals at the NATO summit in Vilnius. These points,
according to A. Januška, confirm that uncertainty about Ukraine's membership in
NATO encourages Russia.
"I remind
you of two sentences from the resolution of the Seimas (...): "To finally
abolish (...) the uncertainty of Ukraine's membership in NATO, because it
encourages further Russia"; "It is necessary to invite Ukraine to
become a NATO member state (by signing the accession protocols and starting the
ratification process when the conditions for this arise)," the signatory
writes on Facebook.
According to him,
after evaluating the results of the NATO summit, based on this resolution, the
meeting was not successful for Lithuania.
"If you
judge according to this highest possible opinion-resolution of the Seimas in
Lithuania and the clause on Ukraine's membership, the Vilnius summit on the
issue of Ukraine was a failure for Lithuania, and all other explanations and
reservations are just evasions," emphasized A. Januška.
"This resolution
of the Seimas was a clearly expressed interest of Lithuania, which everyone had
to strive to implement and which could be a starting point for all political
comments. It is worth understanding and commenting on events not only based on
what politicians or commentators of other countries say, but also based on the
interests of one's own country," he added.
ELTA reminds that
in the approach of the NATO summit held in Vilnius, the resolution of the
Seimas established the main goals of Lithuania in this meeting, paying special
attention to the aspiration of Ukraine's NATO membership.
At the NATO summit
held in Vilnius this week, the issue of Ukraine's membership in NATO attracted
the most attention. Kyiv hoped to receive a clear signal regarding the prospect
of membership, but the Western leaders emphasized even before the start of the
meeting in Vilnius that Ukraine will not be allowed to join NATO if the war
continues.
After long
negotiations on the wording of Kyiv's transatlantic perspective in the
communique of the meeting, the Alliance confirmed that "Ukraine's future
is NATO". It also agreed to abandon the Membership Action Plan (MAP),
confirming long-term military support. It was decided to officially establish
the NATO-Ukraine Council and strengthen bilateral political relations.
However, the
expectations regarding the invitation to NATO remained unfulfilled - the
communique states that the path will be open only "when the allies agree
and when the conditions are met". However, the communication does not
specify what the latter requirements are."
