“One would like to believe it, but it was precisely the
discussion between Laurynas Kasčiūnas and Gabrielius Liaudanskas-Svaras about
the killing of disloyal citizens that took place on May 29, 2025 on “Kasčiūnas
TV”. Former Minister of National Defense L. Kasčiūnas and public figure Svaras
spoke publicly about the war in Ukraine and possible scenarios for the defense
of Lithuania.
However, the conversation took an
unexpected turn – it was mentioned that one of the functions of the state armed
forces could be getting rid of disloyal citizens. This idea was not expressed
figuratively or metaphorically – it was a serious consideration of a real model
of action in the event of war.
Even more surprising is that this discussion did not receive
any official reaction – neither from the Ministry of National Defense, nor from
the military command, nor from the President, nor from the Seimas, nor from
other responsible institutions.
As if it were self-evident that in
the event of war, the state can divide its citizens into “loyal” and “disloyal”
and eliminate the latter. This is no longer political hyperbole, but the
beginning of a dangerous ideological construction in which civil rights become
dependent on the subjective assessment of loyalty, and not on the principles of
the rule of law.
When a politician, a former Minister of National Defense, the leader of one of the most influential
parties – the Homeland Union – Lithuanian Christian Democrats – speaks
about such scenarios, historical parallels inevitably arise. We remember the periods when there was
public talk about the “purification” of the nation, which was soon followed by
mass episodes of repression, persecution and murder. When today there is
public discussion about the liquidation of “disloyal” citizens, it is difficult
to avoid this dangerous historical analogy.”
