Nvidia Helps Robotruck Effort --- The chip company will support Swedish autonomous-truck maker's production

“Nvidia is teaming up with Einride as the Swedish autonomous-truck maker looks to boost its production to meet rising demand for driverless vehicles.

 

The chip giant will provide the underlying platform and artificial-intelligence tools to Einride's autonomous-driving systems, Einride said Monday. The company said it currently operates hundreds of electric trucks for major shipping clients across the U.S., Europe and the Middle East, and expects demand to increase to between 1,500 and 2,000 vehicles by 2028. Some 80% of that demand is suitable for automation in the medium term, Einride said.

 

That will add to the driverless trucks it already has in operation, the company said.

 

Autonomous trucking -- which uses self-driving vehicles that require minimal human intervention -- represents an opportunity to improve safety and efficiency in global freight, said Rishi Dhall, vice president of automotive at Nvidia.

 

Einride, founded in Stockholm in 2016, began trading on the Nasdaq this summer after completing a merger with blank-check firm Legato Merger Corp. III in a transaction that valued Einride's equity at $1.35 billion before proceeds from the deal.

 

The company develops electric self-driving freight vehicles and software platforms for companies from PepsiCo and to European brewers Carlsberg and Heineken.

 

"We have the customers, the operational experience and the technology," said Henrik Green, Einride's chief technology officer. "Building the next generation of the Einride Driver on the Nvidia Hyperion platform, will enable us to scale autonomous deployment across a freight network that's already serving customers today."

 

The partnership with Nvidia marks the latest step in the push toward greater use of autonomous or driverless trucks, following the spread across U.S. cities of self-driving passenger taxis like Alphabet's Waymo vehicles and Tesla's robotaxis.” [1]
